February 26, 2018 – Dr. Elise Heiss, assistant professor of chemistry at King’s College, recently received the Robert Estabrook Moeller Memorial Award to conduct research at Lacawac Sanctuary and Biological Field Station. The a $2,000 grant will support her research, “Nitrogen Cycling in Lake Lacawac: Investigating Environmental Controls on Water Column Nitrification.”
Dr. Heiss has been investigating nitrogen cycling in Lake Lacawac since 2016. The project involves several King's students, including Alexander Krispin, Victoria Zawacki, David Rist, and Audrey Williams. Krispin graduated in May 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in environmental science. He presented research at the 2016 Lacawac Ecology Conference. Zawacki, a junior majoring in chemistry and a participant in King’s dual enrollment engineering program with the University of Notre Dame, recently presented research at the 2017 Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences Conference. Sophomores Rist, a chemistry major, and Williams, an environmental science major, will continue the research project with Heiss.
A faculty member at King’s since 2014, Heiss previously served as an NSF Graduate Research Fellow at Boston University, where she earned her doctorate. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University Maryland.
The Robert Estabrook Moeller Research Fellow awards are given to college and university students and faculty to conduct limnological research on Lake Lacawac and other Pocono region lakes. Lacawac serves as an ecological field research station and public environmental education facility.
