What is the Shoval Center?

Dedicated to continuing the social mission of King’s College, the Shoval Center for Community Engagement and Learning facilitates teaching, research, and volunteer opportunities that advance both the needs of the community and the educational mission of the college.  The Center was created in 2005 through a major gift from Susan and Judd Shoval, co-founders of GUARD Financial Group.

The Center is staffed by Bill Bolan, Kelly Gibbons and Leanne Mazurick.

Bill Bolan (williambolan@kings.edu; ext. 8058) is the Director of the Shoval Center and helps administer the Service-Learning Program, the About-Face Campaign to reduce stigma surrounding substance use disorder, and King's Food Dignity Project to decrease food insecurity. The College currently offers over forty-five service-learning classes that integrate academic learning with "hands-on" community service.

Kelly Gibbons (kellygibbons@kings.edu; ext. 6020) coordinates student volunteer opportunities both on and off campus throughout the academic year, and is responsible for the Shoval Center's social justice programming including Hunger for Justice Week in November.  She also coordinates the community-based work study program and runs CitySERVE, a major component of Fall Welcome that kicks off the program for incoming first-year students.

Leanne Mazurick (leannemazurick@kings.edu; ext. 8402) coordinates Students Engaged in Reflective Volunteer Experiences (SERVE), King’s extremely rewarding and popular alternative-break program.  With trips during fall, winter, spring and summer breaks, there is almost always a site and time to fit your needs. Contact Leanne for info and applications.
